The Spotted Duke by AmandaDrage The Spotted Duke by AmandaDrage
24x24", oil on MDF board.

Started August last year, and I almost trashed it - it's my first large MDF painting and I ran into a few problems early on. But I got over it and worked through them.

It's meant to slightly recall classic 1800s stallion portraits, I think it's ended up looking a bit like a pub sign!

Originally inspired by "The Piebald Horse" by Paulus Potter.
Reference for the horse many thanks to ~S-F-stock! [link]

looks beautiful! as does your other work! You did definitely get the essence of the classical period here - it's exactly what I thought when I saw it. :)

a very beautiful painting, the only thing I would add, is something near the horse, to give it scale, it looks gigantic in that setting alone... maybe abroken fence, or tree stump...maybe some longer grasses, tussocks near the horse, it will just help seperate the horse from the distant back ground.... apart from that nit pick, its AWESOME..... Paul

Thank you Paul I appreciate the comment very much, and I have to say you're not the first to mention the scale issue with this painting so that's perhaps something I should look at fixing!

I can see what you mean about the pub sign, but this is no bad thing. In fact it's one of the reasons I like it:) One might say portraits of horses are at home in pubs and this I think deserves pride of place:)

Many thanks :) I always thought I was one of those people who couldn't paint. I always wanted to use oils but the first time I tried it didn't work very well, and I never was very good with acrylics. But I made myself carry on with the acrylics and get a little more confident with them, then moved on to oils... once I actually made myself experiment with oils properly I found they're not too bad to work with, quite good fun actually :) you should give it another go! Sometimes you just have to be ready, I think :)
