Sundragon by AmandaDrage Sundragon by AmandaDrage
This is CW River of Gold, a dunskin overo stallion owned by Kim Stambaugh. You can see his Facebook fan page here: [link]
This is also where the reference photo came from. Used with kind permission from Kim. [link]

I was intending to add ears at the top, and I actually did, but I decided it looks better cropped, as in the ref photo - it has a bit of impact. And this way it ties in with my series of horses with odd crops and block-colour backgrounds. (See also Untitled, Warmblood, Cortana, as well as Arnie, and a Friesian on a turquoise background, who are both still in progress.)

Derwent Drawing soft coloured pencils and pastels on A3 coloured velour paper.

Thanks so much :) And I'm glad you think so. I wish I could take credit for the crop, unfortunately it's just the same as in the ref photo! Which is why I tried adding ears, so I could at least say I changed something... but it just didn't work out  This way was better.

Wow, the first WIP sketches did not do justice to this guy! His pose is so dynamic and powerful, it literally feels like he's about to explode off the page bucking and hopping.

The contrast between the dark shadows of the neck and his pale, almost invisible white patches on his flank are really eye catching, but the most eye-catching part for me is his eyes--they look almost luminous with the darker tones you've added. The cropped look feels like the right decision, focusing attention squarely on his face and those eyes I might have mentioned ;)

He's a beautiful horse, and you've captured him wonderfully here :D I can't hit that fav button fast enough!

Wow, thank you. Those are all the reasons that drew me to draw this... the contrast especially. And the eyes! I love light-coloured eyes on a horse. So intense.
Thank you so much for the wonderful comment on this!

Definitely!! I'm working on some non-horse stuff right now to balance out my table for Saturday's show... I'm reaching out into the pet portrait market. But after that - back to the horses!!
Thank you very much :)

Fantastic! I'm loving the unconventional cropping here, like you said it increases the impact and 'zoom' of the piece so to speak :) Astounding job on anatomy and colouring, as always

Thank you! Well I wish I could take credit for the crop! On occasion I can, but this time the composition and crop is lifted straight from the photo. I felt I couldn't improve on it, hehe. It was a good shot.

I'm glad that you were able to keep the background paper without coloring it as you spoke of earlier, because it is perfect for the horses coat! Its gorgeous!

Yes, me too. I only wanted to add a background as I felt it was too heavy on one side, but then I remembered I can just crop it with a knife and get it framed to the size and composition I want... :slow:  I'm silly sometimes.
Glad you like it, thank you!!
