Finished in time for Christmas... I have not been a fan of this one throughout, and although it looks better than I imagined now it's done, it's still not a favourite of mine!

I clearly need more practise with the looser style of painting. Also I have no idea what is going on with the colours. ;)

Kittens. Cute to look at. Evil to paint.

Oil 12x12" commission of sorts (for my nan's husband's sister).
Reference was one of my own photos, not uploaded to the internet.

Never painting another one again

Glad you didn't swear off cats for good! This little guy is awesome! We are always our own worst critic, but honestly, how can you find fault with this? Lovely

I think it looks great! I struggle a lot drawing cats because it's just so weirdly difficult to get their proportions correct.

YES it is isn't it! They're just too fluffy and don't seem to have definite structure to them. And don't get me started on the symmetry and the eye placing LOL. Thanks v much :)

Those eyes are entrancing! I love the soft look of the fur, the contrast between that and the eyes is really brilliant :)

You did an amazing job! I see most have commented on the eyes, which are fantastic, but I think you really outdid yourself on the fur. It is an exquisite animal, looks to be just at the point of young adolescence where they are inquisitive and exploratory, but you have a hint at what adulthood will bring. Full of promise not yet realized - I really love that time especially in a cats life. To me you have captured that almost magically.

Really, wow well that makes me feel better because I didn't know what I was doing with the fur at all! I just sort of blundered along and hoped it would look okay in the end! :XD: I love your description of the cat hehe, that makes my day! I love it when people actually see something in the art... Thank you !

I think it looks awesome :) I have no idea how you painted the eyes, but they look incredibly realistic :) Those shades tinted with different colors like blue or yellow add a lot to the picture. And that transparent fur on the edges is also great :) It kind of bleds the kitten with the background in a very nice way :)
I have no idea why you aren't satysfied with this piece :)

I forgot I was supposed to be painting loose when it came to the eyes - which is why they are so much sharper than all else. But actually I think that worked out okay. Haha I am not often satisfied with anything, but with this one I think I am associating it with how it made me feel whilst painting it (a little bit frustrated) rather than what it actually looks like!
Thanks so much :)!

Well, you may say what you like, but those eyes are WONDERFUL!!! The colors looks perfectly fine to me too, maybe you compare it too much to the reference photo to not like it yourself ;-) I like the way she disappears in the background, so soft! I never attempted to paint a kitten though, so I have no idea of how difficult it is...

Haha thank you so much :)! Yeah I will admit I'll be unhappy if the artwork doesn't quite resemble the reference (which in terms of the facial features, this one definitely doesn't!!) But I try to remember that if the artwork looks okay in its own right, disregarding the reference, then that is acceptable. :XD:

I thought it was a digital painting from far away, but its amazing to see what you can do with a brush, now that I see is traditional!!!!! Lovely done and lve the eyes and the pink parts as well. Just like you said, cute to look at but hard to paint. Great job nonetheless:heart:

This is a very strong picture. It's like BOOM. KITTEN. I love it. It's not even sickeningly cute. The eyes are really sharp and crystalline, and the nose, it's perfectly balanced in my eyes. I don't often +fav kittens! :XD:

Great work! Really like your choice of colors for the bg. What breed of cat is this? Regardless of their nastyness to paint (I can't say--I haven't done one for literally years), I think you did a superb job here. :) That little warm touch of yellow on the muzzle and chest really helps bring the kitten forward. And those little wisps of hair along the edges are pulled off really well in this. And look at those deep blue eyes!

Thank you :D I did have to paint over the background hafway through, it was a bit more greenish before and looked yuk. So I'm glad you like it as it is!
The reference I used was actually a photo I took on a Greek island of one of the street cats. For strays, some of them are quite beautiful. Their eyes were probably the most amazing cat eyes I'd ever seen! Here's some of my photos: [link] [link] [link]

Oh, that's cool! Wow, I definitely agree with that. Never seen such beautiful strays before. Usually their fur's all tangled and shaggy or something else is weird. These guys are so precious! It's like their eyes couldn't decide if they wanted to be brown or blue, so they chose both. :XD:

Well definitely a favorite of mine :D Loe the colours, the softness combined with the bright kinda hard eyes and I just have a huge weakness for longhaired white cats

I really love this painting, it's something I would put up on my own wall and only great art goes on my walls
