Mac by AmandaDrage Mac by AmandaDrage
7x10" oil speedpaint commission of a Shire x cob-type horse called Mac.
This one was commissioned as a gift for the commissioner's fiancee, to be presented as a surprise - unfortunately she accidentally saw the photo I emailed him when I was done! But she liked it very much and knew it was Mac straight away. It was collected today - I hope she likes it in person just as much. As it is, the photo isn't quite clear and Mac's face details are not as sharp as in the actual painting.

I had one reference for Mac, but the pose and angle was not ideal so I chose this stock [link] by *ElaineSeleneStock as reference for the pose (not body type) and lighting. Trying to merge the lighting from one ref and the markings from another fried my brain a little at times ;) I'm easily confused.

I unchecked Downloads once the image had uploaded, wrote my description and then noticed the Downloads tickbox had rechecked itself. Note to dA... Stop insisting all content uploaded here be downloadable, it's a matter of principle and it should be the artist's choice NOT yours...

What a lovely skewbald guy! The background plays very well with his coat and this fetlocks...
Great horse and beautifull painting.

I love the style of this one. The colour scheme works beautifully, and well done on the combination of photos! That's something I really really struggle with ~ I can copy a photo easily enough, but find it really difficult combining references like that. It's worked really well, and it must look fantastic on the wall :)

Thank you :) Yes, I struggle with it quite a bit sometimes. I think this one turned out okay in the end even though at one point I was on the verge of hair-tearing!!

Thank you ! Lol that rolling-head smiley :XD:

Total awesomeness as per usual. Look, Amanda, if you have the secret to 'motivation' when it comes to doing client's commissions, please let me know. I'm desperate for some of it!!! Hehe! Great work! Look forward to seeing more stuff!

Thanks so much... :glomp: Lol I don't know, I guess the prospect of money is motivation enough for me :XD: No, I kid. Well, partly. To be honest, I have wanted to be able to do what I enjoy and be paid for it for such a long time, I am just revelling in that right now. I also try and make the best of the ones that aren't so inspiring... for example this one, the one reference I was given was a small photo taken from an odd angle, and the horse looked kind of bored. So I had to go and find a suitable ref I could use that appealed to me, too. The work has to appeal to you in order for you to enjoy it I guess. I'm perhaps lucky in that I haven't yet been commissioned to do something I really have no interest in, for bad ref-photo reasons or other reasons... but I haven't been doing it that long really, there is still time! :XD:

I do find some commissions I really lose my interest in. :( I also procrastinate way more than I should when I should be doing a commission. I always find music in the background really helps at times like these too!

Yes, anything that can help you just dive in and plug on with it is great. I don't listen to music much when I'm drawing. If it makes you feel better I am hopelessly demotivated today!! It's all I can do to go to the kitchen and get myself a drink :XD: let's not even talk about doing any art today!! LOL

Cute, classic portrait. I especially love the mane! And the shoulder's lightning is very appealing. Makes me wanna pet him. :giggle:

Thanks! I would have gone with some bright colour for the background, but I did suggest classic browns as a "safe" alternative, and that was the option chosen! Had to sneak some yellowish in there, though. That shoulder was a pain in the bum. That's the area where I got a bit confused with the conflicting references :XD:

This one looks really nice! It's too bad she happened to see it before he could surprise her with it, but at least she saw it at the end and not as you were starting on it. ;) I love this colorscheme and the glowing edges of light on the horse. Another gorgeous piece from you. :aww:

Haha yes, I was so gutted for him that she accidentally saw it, but it was still a surprise of sorts, I suppose. Anyway the actual painting always looks better than the photo - definitely the case with this one, so I hope she was still surprised, in a way!
Thank you !

Is it hard for you to not get overly detailed on a speed painting? For me I would want to keep working it over and over.

Sometimes I do have to rein myself in with the speedies, yes. I like to detail things and it's often hard to draw the line between just-enough detail, and fussing!

This is really a beautiful speedpainting! Oil paints area mystery to me, so I really admire how you're able to paint with them so quickly and beautifully.

Merging photo references is a great brain exercise! :D I do it all the time to create something original that was inspired by several images. :)

Thanks so much :) Haha, yes I have been doing quite a bit of ref-merging lately. Right now I'm doing another horse portrait, using a ref photo of a different horse for the pose and shading - like I did here. Hope I don't get too muddled up again! :XD: It's useful to be able to do, when you are provided with less-than-ideal photos of the horse in question!

That's right! You don't always find the perfect photo reference for an animal, and even if you do, the photo belongs to somebody else, so I think ref-merging is a really cool thing. :)
Can't wait for your next horse picture! :bounce:

Ah, thank you :) Natural browns were chosen by the commissioner for the background, on my suggestion - but I had to add some yellow in there too, to help with those blue-ish shadows. A nice yellow/blue combination is always good!
