La Bonita by AmandaDrage La Bonita by AmandaDrage
Spanish foal Nicola. Mixed media (pastel, colourpencil, acrylic, a bit of oilpastel)
A4 size toned pastel paper.

I had a bit of trouble with this one but I got there eventually. Basically I lost the tooth of the paper on the foal, and it needed more work, so I was throwing anything at it in desperation and hoping it would stick - hence the oil pastel (in tiny amounts, blended in well with a rubber-tipped shaper) I wouldn't recommend this method.

Reference was used with permission, thanks to Jose Maria Mayoral of Caballos Mayoral. [link] (They post a ton of photos and it's way back so I don't know if I can find it. I'll have a closer comb through in a sec and see if I can get a link.)

Does anyone know if the Spanish name Nicola is male or female? I'm not 100percent sure of Nicola's gender, but I have gender-assigned for the purpose of this piece lol. If it turns out it's a boy, I'll have to change the title!

Thank you very much, glad you like :) I do! A drawing like this at the same size would be around 75-85 (postage extra).

It may not be a recommended method, but it certainly seemed to work in this case :D The foal's expression looks so wonderfully calm and serene, and for some reason I really like the way you've rendered the fur and the fluffy curls of the mane and tail :)

You're welcome! If you decide to draw more foals, you know you've got the tails down pat... and it may be worth drawing a few just to keep your hand in :D

Ahh yes, Nicola is a popular girl's/women's name - I suppose I should have guessed that if it's a female name in English speaking countries, it's going to be female in non-English countries too. But something made me wonder!
Thank you :)!!

Haha yes, kind of fun! But a toss-up between a cute foal drawing and a powerful Andalusian with lots of mane rearing up drawing... that's a hard one :XD:

Lovely work as always. :) You could never tell you had problems with it because it looks effortless and natural. But I can imagine your frustration! Be proud of your persistance because it was defenitaly worth it. Lovely background too, the colours really complement the coat colour of the foal. Great work!

Thank you! I'm glad you can't tell. ;) Yes I had a bit of a bump in the road with this one, wrong mix of media and paper I think! I very nearly wrote this one off, but it turned out to be a nice little piece. Not one of my best, but I've turned out a handful of nice ones this year already so I can't complain!! I did have fun with the background too. One of my favourite colour combinations: yellow, blue, green.
Thanks again Linda!

A handful of nice ones... All of your work looks great to me. :D But I understand, the artist is always the worst critic. :) Love the background. I hate doing them and so am always in awe when others do them well. Lovely!

Hehe well what I meant was, I've done a lot so far considering it's only February! Normally I expect a handful of decent pieces throughout the year, with some alright ones inbetween. So to have done three/four nice ones already is a record... I wonder if I can keep it up! I am almost done with a fifth, too! Although I'm sure you've seen the progress of that one on FB :)
One day, I will do a proper background, with trees, grass and everything! But not yet. I am not ready! LOL

Beautiful work, I love the lighting! The name Nicola was originally a Italian male name, but now it's considered pretty unisex. I know that doesn't help! lol I believe Nicolao is the Spanish equivalent of the male name though, so perhaps in Spanish speaking countries, Nicola is the feminine version.

Ah, wonderful. Yes, I think it's pretty likely it's female, by what I've been told. I was originally going to call the piece Little Prince, when I saw the ref it just immediately looked like a proud little boy-foal... it took some time for me to come around to the idea I was drawing a girly-foal! Haha. But I've warmed to the idea and now I think my drawing looks more female than male. Weird artist talk there... lol

Very cute!

Desperate or not, at least online the "throwing in" anything but the kitchen sink mixed media looks very good. Sometimes that approach ends up looking patchy and messy, but this one looks just perfect. Like you were meaning to do that. Nice colours on the background too!

Ahhh thanks :D It was a close shave, let me tell you! Haha. It was going okay, then I made it worse, then slightly better, then worse again... and finally got to this, after letting it sit for a few days.
Lol, I got to use the yellow pastels! :dummy: Don't get to do that often...
